Renata Mercury-Free batteries
Today, all silver oxide batteries have up to 2% mercury by weight. The introduction of mercury-free batteries could eliminate hundreds of kilograms of this dangerous metal entering our environment every year.
Following European battery regulations, sales of batteries with five parts per million or more of mercury are banned. However, button-type battery cells, such as silver-oxide cells, have received special exemption due to technical difficulty to maintain long product life without using mercury and lead as an anti-corrosive.
Eventually all watch batteries will become mercury-free. As the year progresses we will replace our existing stocks with mercury-free Renata batteries.
